NATO phonetic alphabet

Updated: 5/24/2026, 7:07:22 PM Wikipedia source

The NATO phonetic alphabet, officially the International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet, is an internationally recognized set of names for the letters of the Latin alphabet and the Hindu-Arabic digits. It is most commonly used in radio communication, where the usual names of the letters are likely to be misheard. It was defined in 1955–1956 by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

  4. Written "nine" in the examples, but pronunciation given as "niner"
  5. The ICAO specifies that all syllables in these words are to be equally stressed (§5 note), but in practice they are not.
  6. With the code words for the digits and decimal, each syllable is stressed equally.
  7. Only the second (English) component of each code word is used by the Aeronautical Mobile Service.
  8. Each sequence of figures is both preceded and followed by "as a number" – or, for punctuation only, "as a mark" – spoken
