Germán Vargas Lleras

Germán Vargas Lleras (19 February 1962 – 8 May 2026) was a Colombian politician who served as 10th vice president of Colombia under president Juan Manuel Santos from 2014 to 2017. Vargas Lleras was one of the main advocates for the implementation of 4G roads in Colombia and has been considered one of the most prepared vice presidents in the history of Colombia. Born in Bogotá, D ., and raised in Bojacá, Vargas Lleras attended the Universidad del Rosario, where he earned a law degree. He began his political career as a Senator from 1994 to 2008, and later served as President of the Senate of Colombia from 2003 to 2004. He was appointed Minister of the Interior and Justice, and subsequently Minister of the Interior, during the presidency of Juan Manuel Santos. In 2014, President Santos chose him as his running mate for the 2014 presidential elections. They defeated their opponents from the Democratic Center party: Finance Minister Óscar Iván Zuluaga and Interior Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo. In 2017, he resigned to run for president in the 2018 presidential elections, in which he finished fourth.
