Updated: Wikipedia source

2026 Makerfield by-election

A by-election for the United Kingdom parliamentary constituency of Makerfield is due to be held on 18 June 2026 following the resignation of Josh Simons, Member of Parliament (MP) for the Labour Party. Simons resigned amid the ongoing Labour leadership crisis to allow Andy Burnham, mayor of Greater Manchester, to stand for a seat in Parliament, which would then allow Burnham to stand for the leadership of the Labour Party. It is the first time that a by-election has been triggered specifically to provide a seat for a figure not currently in parliament since the 1965 Leyton by-election.
